Simple Editing for Turn Restrictions in OpenStreetMap

--

By John Firebaugh

The new version of iD, the web editor for OpenStreetMap, makes it even simpler to add turn restrictions to OpenStreetMap.

Click an intersection where you want to add a turn restriction, select the portion of the road entering the turn, and click the icons to toggle between unrestricted and restricted turns.

Turn restrictions are traffic rules imposed by signage such as no-right-turn signs. Good turn restriction data is vital for solid directions services.

We’ve used this feature to add nearly 100 turn restrictions in San Francisco to OpenStreetMap, making our Smart Directions more accurate and improving the map for everyone.
