Wildfire season is here in the western US. Fires across California are forcing evacuations and severe air quality warnings, made all the more challenging by the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are using maps, imagery, or location data to support wildfire response and recovery, we’re here to help.
Maps are a critical communication tool during natural disasters and emergency response situations. Some of the projects we are watching closely are the LA Times wildfires map, the Pyregence fire forecasts, and Sparetheair.org’s air quality forecast for the Bay Area.

Location tools also support wildfire preparedness, such as the US Forest Service’s Wildfire Risk to Communities portal which helps households and communities across the country understand and reduce their risk.
When it is time to recover and learn from past wildfires, maps also help put data and stories into context, as illustrated by the newly released investigation ‘Older and Overlooked’ by KQED and CalMatters.
We are on standby to support anyone building for wildfire preparedness, response, and recovery. Whether you have an existing project or are just getting started, connect with our Community team.
