Typhoon season in Japan: Crisis Mapping and OpenStreetMap
日本の台風シーズン：クライシスマッピングとOpenStreetMap

It’s typhoon season in Japan. Last weekend, super Typhoon Haisen became one of the strongest storms in decades to make landfall. It’s destructive forces caused a loss of power across hundreds of thousands of homes in Japan before making landfall near Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Last year’s Pacific typhoon season was the costliest on record, producing 29 named storms, 17 typhoons, and four super typhoons.
日本は台風シーズンです。先週末、スーパー台風ハイシェン（台風10号）は数十年で最も強い台風にまで成長し、九州の西側の東シナ海を通過しました。その破壊的な力により、日本では数十万世帯で停電が発生し、その後韓国で2番目に大きな都市である釜山付近に上陸しました。昨年の太平洋上における台風シーズンの被害額は記録上最も大きくなり、29個の台風が発生し、強い台風が17個、さらに強いスーパー台風（日本の気象庁の区分で「猛烈な台風」相当）が4個発生しました。
Japan regularly experiences disasters like flooding, landslides, and earthquakes resulting in drastic changes to the landscape that require the map to be updated quickly and accurately. OpenStreetMap is where people impacted by disasters join together to map both preparation and response.
日本では洪水、地滑り、地震などの災害が定期的に発生しており、地形が大きく変化するため、地図をすばやく正確に更新する必要があります。OpenStreetMapは、被災地で活動する人々と協力して事前にリスクの高いエリアと発災後の状況の両方をマッピングするプラットフォームです。
OpenStreetMap is a unique data source for Japan in two ways:
- Map updates are made near real-time as soon as change happens on the ground.
- As an open community, anyone can contribute their knowledge.

For years, OpenStreetMap Japan has collaborated with communities, local governments, and response agencies to activate for emergencies by conducting training and gathering high resolution imagery through the DRONEBIRD initiative.
